Animals and nature in and around Wels

Schmiding Zoo

The Schmiding zoo in Krenglbach, close to Wels, is the biggest zoo in Upper Austria. It presents itself as a modern zoo with exciting cultural activities and lots of fun and action for children. Along the 4 km route, visitors can see the spacious biotope areas such as the African Savannah, giraffes, various species of monkey, tropical birds, antelopes, zebras and many other interesting animals.

The spectacular successes of the Schmiding zoo breeding programme, the world's biggest bird of prey enclosure (70meres long, 15 metres high) and the concept of spacious living enclosures for the animals residing in Schmiding draw 150,000 visitors per year.

Wels zoo
Marvel at the variety, colourfulness and beauty of the more than 650 animals at Upper Austria's oldest zoo - which includes the most species of primates of any zoo in Austria. The Mühlbach flows through the park area and forms many ponds, indentations and wetland biotopes. Native and exotic storks, herons, cormorants, pelicans, cranes, ducks and geese can be found here.

Pond, snake-necked and alligator turtles can all be found sunning themselves in this biotope. The dry enclosures are inhabited by lion-tailed macaques, red faced macaques and marmosets. A particular focal point are the native and exotic birds from Europe, Africa, America, Australia and Asia. The hornbills, kingfishers, turacos and laughing geese are among the visitors' favourites.
The Wels zoo is free of charge all year round!
Opening hours:
1st April - 31st October: 7:00 - 19:45
1st November - 31st March: 7:00 - 18:00

"agrarium" -

the family experience paradise in Steinerkirchen

The "agrarium" family paradise, unique in Europe, has something for all ages to enjoy with its imaginative symbiosis between plants, animals and adventures. At Upper Austria's oldest castle site - the Almegg castle - the imaginatively themed gardens with their vast array of fruits, cereals, vegetables and thousands of flowers and herbs in different shapes and forms impress visitors.

With the exception of the 'poison garden', everything which is ripe can be tasted and nibbled. The meadows are also worth a visit, e.g. with a picnic basket, which can be borrowed from the site.
In the 'stroking area', our visitors can try their hand at animal taming - as soon as the little goats see a food sack, there's no holding them back!

Stadl Paura Austrian horse centre

In the Stadl Paura horse centre you can view the world from horseback and see events of international standing. The Salzkammergut lakes, Traunsee lake, Attersee lake and Mondsee lake are the perfect places for water sports fun and action.
