Archaeological collections in the former Minoriten monastery

The Wels area has been populated for many thousands of years. Visitors can take an enlightening trip through the city's past with the newly renovated archaeological collection housed in the building of the former Minoriten monastery. The collection ranges from prehistory and early history to the Roman period, which was particularly significant for the city. The extensive range of archaeological finds obtained during the decades of research in the city and the surrounding area have made it possible to piece together a picture of life at that time.

There is also, amongst other things, a reconstruction of part of a Roman city. Along the Roman road, visitors gain insight into the various different tradesmen outlets and into the living room of a wealthy Roman citizen. The dining room, kitchen and living room together with the then customary house shrine all bring the past to life. The street of tombs provides visitors with information on Roman funeral ceremonies.

The area's ever-changing history and the history of the Minoriten building can be experienced through the archaeological excavations - some of which are open to visitors.
