WELSCITY MUSEUM
SCINETIFIC LIBRARY
SCINETIFIC LIBRARYSCINETIFIC LIBRARYSCINETIFIC LIBRARYThe
Scientific library has been in existence since the founding of
the Wels city museum in 1904. Building on the official library
of the city of Wels, the collection has increased in scope over
the course of the years but has also increased its volume in
the scientific fields. Today the library contains some 6,000
individual tomes and 902 periodicals which will be increased
and updated during the year by roughly 390 titles through
targeted purchases, donations and bequests. A publications
exchange programme run by the 'Musealverein Wels' expands the
number of books available with publications from many museums
in Europe and the USA. The library is primarily composed of
historical specialist literature in the fields of prehistory,
archaeology, ethnography, city history, museum studies, art and
culture history and location and monuments conservation. The
library also has a collection of museum guides and catalogues
from many exhibitions in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and
Italy.
The library is a reference library and is open t both
specialists and the public alike.

EDUCATIONAL MUSEUM PLACEMENT PROGRAMME
for schools at the Wels castle
From grain to bread:
6 - 10 years / 1st - 4th school year
From tilling the field to harvesting to baking the bread,
school children can learn all about this important basic
foodstuff here. They work in small groups with specially
selected exhibits to learn about the lengthy process of
transforming grain into bread. Pupils can then bake their bread
in the bakery workshop and swap experiences while enjoying the
food together.
A guest in the past - living with citizens and farmers of
the past:
6 - 10 years / 1st - 4th school year
Based on their own experiences with today's culture of
living, school children can learn about the living and everyday
lives of citizens and farmers during the 19th century. Museum
objects are brought to life with various tales and stories.
During their trip through history, pupils are presented with
fascinating objects which are generally not accessible to
visitors. As part of the practical section of their visit, the
children are encouraged to use their imaginations and various
materials to investigate the theme of 'living'.
Researchers on the trail of the Wels castle:
10 - 15 years / 5th - 9th school year
Pupils split into small groups to conduct intensive studies
into the still visible remains of the mediaeval castle and
corresponding museum objects from the Middle Ages. Hidden
stairways and unearthed walls from long-forgotten times are
explained in a way that makes history exciting. The small
groups then present the results of their research to the
others.
Wels as a market town:
10 - 15 years / 5th - 9th school year
This programme focuses on the significance of Wels as a market
town. Pupils investigate the development of the market over the
centuries. With the aid of objects selected by the pupils, the
group discusses the former role of the market. Changes and
similarities to today are highlighted. The city square as a
former market place is also shown through photographs.
Programmes available at all times, if bookings are made in
time. Tel: 07242/235-7350
CELEBRATIONS
The Wels castle is a living museum whose courtyard and
rooms are also used for various celebrations and events. The
history of agriculture collection in particular gives
