Pferdeeisenbahnmuseum (Horse railway museum)

4600 Wels, Maxlhaid 9

In Wels, nine buildings from the K.K. PRIV. ERSTEN EISENBAHN-GESELLSCHAFT railway company have survived, the biggest concentration of its kind along the whole of the Budweis-Gmunden track.

Directly attached to the guest house is the 'Bahnzeit-Stall' museum which documents the history of the south 'Linz-Wels-Gmunden' track. Painstaking research by the 'Verein Pferdeeisenbahn Wels-Maxlheid' horse railway association has patched together the history of the south track from its opening in 1.11.1834 to its being abandoned in 1859. Sections of the museum are dedicated to 'the age of the railway' and 'what came after the horse railways'.
One of the attractions of the BAHNZEIT-Stall museum is a recreation of a salt wagon. Also on display: "deerlick" from the 'oö Zeitreise 2000' exhibition and paddock.

The south track began at the 'Basdargarten' station in Linz (now the Upper Austria state museum) and ran via Neubau, Wels and Alt-Lambach (Stadl-Paura) to Gmunden. In Wels, the yard of the MAXLHAID guest house was used for heavy traffic. Passengers (in its peak year 160,000) used the station in the 'Vorstadtplatz' (Stelzhamerstraße 11). The company building stood in front (Bahnhofstraße 6).
