According to a retail structure analysis carried out in November 2008 by CIMA GmbH, the city of Wels draws on a catchment area of up to 616,700 people.

- Retail centrality: 240%
- Total retail sales area: 260.430 m², of which 18 % are in the city centre
Compared to other large Austrian retail cities (e.g. Dornbirn, Linz, Salzburg, St. Pölten etc.), Wels has the highest retail turnover per citizen (Euro 11,218) and has one of the highest turnovers in Austria. Across the city as a whole, Wels has a very balanced and comprehensive range of outlets and an extensive variety of sectors. Particularly varied is the range of sectors represented in the inner city.
